1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS
Just freshened up! This SS has it
all. Our Chevelle SS was a California/western car until 2004 when she came to a
secure, controlled multi-car Chevelle, Camaro and vintage Harley collection here
in Michigan. Built the last week of April, 1970 in Los Angles, this SS is an
original 396/350, 4-speed Forest Green car.
Notice the original working cowl
induction. Under the hood note the air cleaner reads 396/350, but there’s more
to this story. The original 396/350 V8 (TO43CTX) was built in Towanda, NY on
April 3, 1970 but is not currently installed in the car. An excellent running
427 V8 with an Edelbrock Performance 2.0 intake and a 4bbl Holley 750 CFM
carburetor currently fills the engine bay. The original engine, along with its
original heads (dated 2/20/70 and 3/2/70) are also included in the package.
The car’s original Muncie close
ratio M20 4-speed works as new. The original rear end has also been rebuilt
along with new brakes and aluminized exhaust with chambered mufflers. The front
suspension and steering have been rebuilt and the car sports new tires all
around. All the mechanical work has been done since 2004 – less than 2, 000
miles ago.
The body is in excellent condition
with metal panels with very minor skimming to provide a laser straight
body. Paint work was completed early July, 2009 – yup, it’s fresh! The car
remains the original 48/48 Forest Green. The front bumper sports a minor ding
and the rear bumper has light pitting and minor abrasions. The frame and
undercarriage are solid with no rust or corrosion issues, but shows minor wear
from being driven and enjoyed! Weld spots along the rocker, panel seams are all
correct, and the quarter panels have their original factory stamps.
The interior is in very good
condition, with brand new carpeting, new console, recently converted bucket
seats, and more. The door panels, dash, and seat backs show some wear. The seals
and gaskets and trim are in good to very good condition. All the glass appears
original - including the windshield; which has imperfections from nearly 40
years of use and can be replaced on request.
If asked what we’d do to get this SS
to the next level, we point to the bumpers, undercarriage detailing and,
perhaps, a return to an original-looking radio and minor other improvement to
the interior. We can do all that along with Vintage Air and more!
This SS is a higher-end driver that
needs nothing to be enjoyed and competitive in local shows. Or it’s the right
car that needs just a little more to leave most competitors in the dust. You
choose.
