1928 Ford Model A
In 1928, the Ford Model A reappeared. With more than
1,000 more components, the A was a far more sophisticated vehicle than the Model
T. The
A's engine displacement was double the T (220CID with 40 brake horse power). Its
top speed approached 65 MPH. The new engine sported a water pump and a new ignition
system, and the planetary transmission was replaced by the A's 3-speed unit. The
A also boasted 4-wheel mechanical brakes and hydraulic shocks, but kept the
semi-elliptical front and rear suspension springs.
Like our rumble Seat Sport Coupe, all 1928 A models
had full black fenders with contrasting color bodies and pin stripes. Safety
glass was the “WOW” body-feature for the year. The dual horizontal front and
split rear bumpers, along with the radiator, headlights and supports gave the A
the unmistakable elegant and strong look promised by Ford.
Our A was purchased by the last owner in April of
2007 from a collection in Florida. It's been properly maintained since and
garaged except in the best weather. The owner has recently purchased a '28
Roadster and has been told he can't keep both…
Other than our suspicion that the fuel tank has
been replaced with one from a '29 A (because of missing firewall markings) the
car is very authentic - all the right components in the right place.
Mechanically the car is correct, very solid and ready to drive anywhere you
would take an A. The frame, body, suspension, brakes and tires (Goodyear 4.50 x
21) are in very good working order. Bushings and king pins are in good order
too.
The body shows well though the paint (see the
photos) is checked in spots - some more noticeable than others. (This is a very
good to excellent 10 foot car and a good 3-foot car.) There are no rust issues
and the body is all metal.
The interior, upholstery, side panels and rumble
seat are all in good shape. The upholstery is not correct but is very tastefully
done using excellent fabrics, with great workmanship.
The gauges, chrome and stainless hardware are all
in good working order and excellent cosmetic condition. The hardtop canvas is in
excellent shape. Note the unusual, but correct, rear opening window and the dual
fender-mounted spare tires - complete with canvas covers.
A Hershey show judge, RM auction volunteer and
Packard expert came by recently for his regular visit. (He's forgotten more than
we'll ever know about these old cars.) Joe took special note of this A, paused
and said: “Nice, very nice.” Then he pointed out a flaw on the steering wheel
and commanded us to “fix it.” We immediately did.
Nice, very nice…
