1965 Ford Mustang Fastback GT
When Ford introduced its fastback
Mustang in 1965 they called it a 2+2. We call this one extremely special because
it's about as close to a survivor as they come and nearly showroom fresh. Every
owner has known this car's investment value and maintained it accordingly.
In the 70's the lower rear
quarters received attention. The closest inspection reveals very careful and
professional work that meets today's standards. At that time the GT features
were added, using NOS parts (remember NPD and others like them didn't exist back
then). Otherwise this 2+2 is correct, original and authentic in every way
(excluding the later model radio and aftermarket Torque Thrust wheels).
The odometer shows just less than
37,000 miles. While we have no absolute proof those miles are correct, the drive
train, body, interior - every inch of the car and every component suggests the
miles are true.
This 2+2 was built at Ford's
Dearborn Assembly Plant on February 6, 1965 and delivered to its Dallas zone for
retail sale. The car's C code 289 CID/200HP 2-bbl V8, which has been upgraded to
a 4-bbl carburetor and C-4 dual range automatic transmission run as new and are
coupled to the car's original 2.80:1 rear axle. Our 2+2 also has power steering
and brakes - that's a rare find!
There is no damage or corrosion
to the underside and suspension. The critical areas, including the torque boxes,
are like new although the original red-oxide has been refreshed in black (paint,
not undercoating). Our inspection showed minor leaking of the rear brake
cylinders, which are being cared for. Otherwise the brakes, exhaust, cooling
system, and Cooper Cobra radial GT tires are in excellent shape - and ready to
go…
The car's Wimbledon White body is
metal and solid. The chrome and stainless trim are in very good to new
condition, as is the glass. All seals, gaskets, felt, and bushings are in very
good condition and show as nearly new. The fitment is excellent. The pictures
note one small area on the passenger-side c-pillar where the paint isn't perfect.
This can be properly corrected or left alone. You decide whether perfection or
survivor-hood is more important.
Besides the late model radio, the interior shows like this car left the showroom. There are no
stains, fading, cracking or rips - no deterioration; not even the typical
pitting on the stainless top of the console. Note the wood wheel, rally pack.
All the gauges, wipers, horn, lights and e-brake - all the conveniences work as
new. Yes this car is that nice!
There is a reason this model won
both the Tiffany Gold and Industrial Design Institute Medals. And here is the
Mustang that can earn you medal after medal and mile after mile of driving
pleasure and investment satisfaction.
