Chevrolet BelAir
4-Door Hardtop Sports Sedan
The
other day we saw a souped up “57 BelAir 4-door
post with a 6 liter fuel-injected engine and
6-speed tranny – all for only $68,000!
By
contrast, here’s a realistically priced,
dependable, driver-quality ’57 BelAir 4-door
hardtop. Its correct, recently rebuilt 283 V8
engine and 2-speed Powerglide transmission run
great; starting easily, running and driving very
well. The exhaust, brakes, suspension and tires
are fine and ready for a x-country trip, but a
jack or spare are not included. The steering
works well with no slop or play. The speedometer
was recently rebuilt. The electric system works
great, including fuel pump, lights, aftermarket
gauges, and more, but the factory radio and clock
do not function.
The
glass, seals, chrome and stainless are in good
condition, with the trim showing the wear of a
driver-quality car. The green and white
interior is in good condition. The seat skins
have some minor wear and the back of the front
seat has a couple of holes. The carpet,
headliner, door panels, and dash are nice.
Aftermarket gauges (water temperature, oil
pressure, and fuel) have been tastefully added
under the dash.
The body panels are solid
and are painted turquoise with a white top. The
paint work is very nice driver quality with lots
of shine but a few minor imperfections.
The
frame and suspension are solid and have recently
been detailed to show well. All 6 body mounts
are solid. The pans appear and sound solid with
no soft spots. There is evidence of repair and
patching on the top side of the pans. That
patching is functional and is doing its job, but
it was not done to show specifications.
This
is a car you can drive anywhere and enjoy for
years without need for work. It’s a sound car
you can restore while driving over time. Or,
it’s a great base car for building your own
high-end resto-mod ’57.
